1) They never gave themselves a name. They had no reason to do so.

Read. A lot. Especially writers who are better than you are.

While it is possible to make a living writing, fiction writing is  generally something you do freelance and  unless you are really successful, it is hard to make a good living just doing that. You will probably  have to take a day job, possibly writing-related, such as in journalism, advertising, etc. So I would recommend getting a degree  in Communications or something like that.
