Thanks

1) Multi-part answer --

a) I can't really say "yes" or "no" to this, because whether we did something like that again (with not only the story emphasis but things like the truck tour) would be a call that Marketing would make.

b) One thing to note is that, with most of our "big" lines these days, we seem to have a TV series. That mitigates the need to do a lot of story telling in other media.

c) The reason you saw so much investment and so many things with BIONICLE in 2001 is that it was essentially a whole new category for us -- a story-driven, buildable action figure line -- and the only way it would work would be to aggressively push it. The idea was, "Pretend this is a big movie that we are doing toys for and just get the line out there so it's everywhere you look."

No idea if or even to whom, but if you could pass an idea to the marketing department to have a mata nui online game for the new bionicle, i'm sure that would attract a lot of attention for the new audience. they had that one game they made last year for android and ios, but an expanded game with montly updates to the play/app store similar to the original MNOG would be absolutely fantastic and a great way to expande the lore of okoto and grab the kids' interest.

in addition, with a few non-intrusive in-app advertisments, that game could also generate a little revenue.

just my $0.02.

Nothing is impossible for any LEGO line, but I do know that MNOG cost a fortune to make.

Hey Greg. I have some questions about Hordika... And toa in general...

1. Would a toa hordika always have a rhotuka according to their element, or would it vary as with most entities using rhotuka?

2. Do toa subjected to visorak venom truly lose their elemental powers,(Barring rhotuka) or do they simply lose the mental discipline to use them properly?

2a. If toa hordika retain their powers, would a theoretical antidote which only reversed the mental effects of visorak venom let them use those powers in hordika form

1) A Toa Hordika would, yes.

2) They actually lose the powers.

out of universe explanation aside where you need enough story material to fill a whole story year, why didn't the toa hordika just use remove poison kanoka to undo the mutation? were there not any around that they could find, did nobody think of it, or...

while i'm mentioning story years, i figured the LEGO message boards would be the best place to ask where i could find the main story source for the new bionicle. for the 2015 year i know they had those videos on bionicle dotcom, but i've been unable to find anything for the new 2016 story. are there comics, books, videos...?

1) I don't get the impression they were thinking all that clearly.

2) There are books starting to come out, as of last fall, as well as graphic novels. Plus there will be the Netflix limited series to tell 2016 story.

A question just popped into my head.

The Golden-skinned being grants wishes dreams, right? So what happens if two dreams oppose eachother? E.G. 'I want the Makuta to all die permanently right now' vs 'I want the Makuta to live on forever'?

Would probably depend on the will of the dreamers. You can one person who dreams of being rich, and really, really wants it ... and someone who dreams of being famous, but only wants it ... so one dream will be much stronger than the other.

Does the GSB have any control over that outcome? Or do you think the maddness we saw with annonna (hope i'm spelling that right) showed that he can't really control what dreams he brings to reality?

I don't think he does, no.

  4. Skakdi do have the full spectrum of elements, right? Like plasma and psionics?
  5. Assuming question 11 is a yes, since the Makuta culled all the Toa of Iron and Magnetism, would they have made similar efforts among the Skakdi population? If question 10 is a yes, would the Makuta and culled those species' irons and magnetics too?

I think this guy's ^ questions got buried (i haven't seen an answer yet and i'm reading it backwards haha) but these are definitely some good questions!

1) No

2) No

3) Not that I am aware of

4) Unknown. Not something we had discussed

5) I don't think so, simply because Skakdi are easier to manipulate. Even if they absolutely hate you and want nothing to do with you, it is easy enough to provoke them to war with each other, thus neutralizing them as a threat.

2) Did BIONICLE characters look like exactly like the set we had been sold?

3) Where are the muscles of the inhabitants of the Matoran universe? Are they "incorporated" into the pieces we saw in the toys, or are they visible and therefore "beyond" what LEGO sold us?

i think the best representation of how they "really" look would be the movies. there you can see how the organic tissue is integrated into their armor, especially in the second one. you can see how their armor is actually an exoskeleton of sorts to the soft tissues underneath. as far as the sets go, you can kinda see how those pieces relate to what you see in the movies: the LEGO pieces closely resemble the exoskeleton, and their organic tissue would be... well, inside the pieces.

as for whether certain body parts look like other body parts in different characters with similar set pieces, i'd say probably not. i'm going to point you toward the movies for this again. while you can't see every character in there, you can see the interpretation of each set piece based on the role it plays in that character's body. for example, gali nuva's arms and legs have the same set pieces, but they don't look exactly alike in the movie. also, kopaka nuva's left arm uses the same set piece as the vahki arms do, but in the movie, the vahkis' arms look totally different than kopaka's arm.

hope that helps!

To add on to his answer -- the original conceit behind BIONICLE was "pretend this was a big-budget movie and we are doing toys based on it." So we were going for a Technic version of these characters.

Do you want to finish uncompleted story of bionicle? Or when LEGO stopped pay, you had lost interest? What will happen if you'll publish new chapters on the other websites? Or LEGO will punish you for this? What if the fans will donate you for new chapters?

1) I was never paid any extra for doing the BIONICLE web serials or the comic book -- that was stuff I did in my own time, on top of my regular work. I was paid by Scholastic to do the novels.

2) For me to do additional work on the old story, LEGO Company would have to give me permission. They own the story and the characters, not me. And since they are trying to promote a whole new story, it really wouldn't make any sense for them to be putting more old story out there. It would just confuse new fans.

There is another bunch of questions for you, Mr. Farshtey:
1) After the dismantling of GSR all remained there characters were saved, but what happened to the Zyglak? Did the Toa put them in the makeshift prison or something?

2) Did Conjurer came out of the coma?

3) What happened to Tyrant?

4) How Charger was transformed from Kane-ra into a sapient creature?

5) It saying "Devastator originated from the realm of Karzahni, and is reported to have emerged from a fiery crag in the barren landscape of the island". What is the actual origin of Devastator? Was he created by Karzahni?

6) What happened to Metru Nui in Toa Empire alternate universe after leaving of Takanuva and death of Tuyet?

7) How pocket dimensions are appearing?

8) Can Botar escape from the Red Star via his teleportation powers?

Dear Greg,

I don't know how often you hear this but I'd just like to let you know that you are a really great author and storyteller. I grew up with the BIONICLE books you wrote, and loved them then; they were my favorite part of BIONICLE (which was and still is my favorite story franchise). And now I'm much older and in college and have much more experience with anaylizing literature, and your books still hold up under that light. In fact, I think I can appreciate them more, even beyond my nostagia lenses. You made the characters and places come alive. You made the already incredible BIONICLE story that much more engaging and interesting, with your writing skill and clear love of what you were making. I want you to know that you are part of what made BIONICLE so overwhelmingly great, and that I am thankful for that.

Assuming a Matoran somehow forgot he was biomechanical, would he be able to stuff food inside his mouth and swallow it?

He could do that now, if he wanted to, the same way Rahi do. Any energy he was going to get from the food he would have gotten upon making physical contact with it. Matoran do not have a digestive system to process food.

Does the food disapeer or does it pile up inside the Matoran until it eventually explodes?

Hey Greg, is it possible for Kanoka disks, such as a Weaken Disk, to afftect Toa Tools?

Yes. Toa tools are generally just standard objects through which the Toa can focus his/her power.

But is it still possible for a Toa Tool to deflect the disks like a Tennis Racket deflects a ball?

So Greg, I know you're getting asked a million questions per day about Bionicle, Ninjago, and essentially anything LEGO. What have you been doing lately? Are you still working with LEGO, or do you have some other business you're working for?

Wait - I know! You got fed up with LEGO cancelling Bionicle, so you've gone to work for... Mega Bloks! GASP! Joking

I am still at LEGO Company, as Editorial Director, working mostly on the print magazines. BIONICLE was always a sideline for me, it was never my actual job here.

Hi Greg,

Writing questions: do you ever get writer's block, and if you do, how do you address it?

Thanks
