2, 4) There are no story reasons for why they looked as they did. They looked that way because a) that is how the set designers made them and b) the intent was for them to be perceived as bad guys before their real motivations were revealed.

3) My assumption was that they were put there by the GBs during the construction, for purposes as yet unknown

1) If they asked, would you be willing to?

3) Why six of them though?

1) Probably, but I am not sure they would ask. It really would make more sense to interview somebody from the new story team about new BIONICLE.

2) Six was kind of the magic number with BIONICLE -- we always did six of things, because it tied things back to the Toa teams and the six elements, etc.

1) There are still people who care about old BIONICLE. Thats why I'm here, and why everyone else who asks BIONICLE questions are here.

2) Do you know what they are for, and just keeping it away from us so there is some mystery in BIONICLE?

1.) Could the galaxy in which the Solis Magna System resides be called "Galaxia Magna", latin for Great Galaxy(or rather Galaxy Great)? BIONICLE uses a lot of latin terms, like Aqua Magna, and most, if not all, the MNOGII matoran names. Could it?

2) Is there an asteroid belt in the Solis Magna System?

3) How far would Bara/Bota/Aqua Magna be from Solis Magna? You can use comparisons with our solar system. For example, Aqua Magna could be about the same distance from the sun as Mars, Bara could be where the asteroid belt is, and Bota Magna Jupiter.

4) What type of star is Solis Magna?

Hello, Greg! I know that you are not responding to any posts regarding bionicle 2015, so I will refrain from asking about the topic. But, i must ask: if you ever get the chance, will you try to finish The Yesterday Quest and The Powers That Be? I realize that you're WAY over your head with the Ninjago and Chima books, but I just feel that the serials had so much potential, and could have been absolutely amazing. i eagerly await your response Happy

I actually asked about doing that earlier this year. But, understandably, with new BIONICLE featuring an all-new story, LEGO is not looking for "new old" story to get pumped out and possibly confuse new fans. I can't argue with that, because the odds are they are right - it would be like re-releasing the old Scholastic books now. Because of the number of story and character differences between new BIONICLE and old BIONICLE, it would have the potential to really cloud matters.

3) I wasn't particularly bothered by the Spear being around longer. I had nothing in particular against it.

Sorry, I guess it has been a while.

Now, you were telling me a long time ago(And I apologize again for not following up with that conversatiion) about the Hero Factory Secret Mission books and the organization, and your plans before the books were canceled. You mentioned some sort of group of governments who weren't happy with Hero Factory. Could you maybe explain it a little more?

Yes. See, when I started the books, one of the things that came to mind is that HF is the product of a private company. It's not a government police force or even an intergalactic government police force. It's more like Apple creates a police force and we all have to answer to it. My feeling was that a lot of governments, and other companies, probably would not like that idea all that much and might well start conspiring to get rid of HF and replace it with something more accountable to them.

Now that you mention it, could you say whether that's a general rule to be followed in this topic? Since it's unreasonable to expect you to remember every detail after the story ended four years ago and you obviously have better things to do with your time than dig through every story bible there ever was to answer all the questions you get here. With a rule like this you don't really need to worry about the details of what was said and written before, the fanbase can essentially 'filter' your answers by comparing them to those details.

I do think that, yes. The simple fact is, I wrote somewhere in the neighborhood of 800,000 - 900,000 words between 2001 and 2010, and I can't remember all of it. And I do  not want to be retconning left and right because of that. So if an answer already exists on something, that answer should stand except in really rare cases that I cannot even conceive of right now.

Dear Greg Farshtey Mighty Lord Of Bionicle (and Ninjago for that matter),

I was wondering if Hydraxon's mask is a kanohi or not. I know his copy is powerless but that does not mean that all copies of said mask are. Also I would like to apologise for accidentally repeating myself. I had previously posted this in the wrong section of the site.

No, it's not.

Hello, Mr. Farshtey,

I posted these earlier, but I think they got lost somewhere, so I'm posting them again:

  1. Were all Toa Hagah teams comprised of six members, or did the numbers vary by Makuta?
  2. Do the inorganic forms of the Toa Inika’s Kanohi resemble their organic forms, at least to some extent (I ask because the Kanohi of Jovan and Tobduk are depicted as identical in their set forms)?
  3. Since Shadow Kraata are able to speak Matoran, can they also speak when operating a Rahkshi, or does the suit impair their speech?
  4. The set form of Miserix’s dragon form is depicted with a bladed staff-like weapon. Was this weapon his tool in his default Makuta form, just enlarged, or did he wield a different weapon?
  5. Was Icarax originally intended to be a new set incarnation of Teridax (because of the Kraahkan), or was he always supposed to be a separate Makuta?
  6. Were the shapes of the Mistika Makuta’s masks significantly altered by the waters of the Karda Nui swamp, or did they still resemble their original forms to some extent?
  7. We know that Roodaka gained limited control over Shadow by tapping into her inner darkness, and that any being can do this with proper training.  Would it then be possible for a being to gain limited powers of Light by focusing on their inner goodness?

Thank you in advance!

There's been a debate going on about the canonization of things for old BIONICLE story, and I thought I would share my thoughts on this.
1) First of all, the notion held in some quarters that I no longer care about old BIONICLE and will just canonize anything is wrong and a little insulting. If I did not care about old BIONICLE (or Gen1 as some people call it), I would not be spending my time answering questions on this board. I invested 10 years of my life in Gen1 and wrote over 800,000 words on it. So yes, I care.
2) That said, one of the reasons NOT to add much to canon in the past was the possibility that Gen1 might come back in some form someday. With new BIONICLE officially a reboot, that option is extremely unlikely to happen. So allowing bits into the story here or there is not going to ruin any official plans for the future. Also, since it is also extremely  unlikely that authorization will ever come to write new chapters of old story, the only additions there can be to  old story are these minor canonizations.
3) There are things I do  not want to do. I am not going to add new Toa elements, and I do not want to start doing a lot of retcons which is why I made the rule that if one of my answers is contradicted by pre-established canon, canon takes precedence. The kind of things I have been canonizing -- an extra Rahi for Mata Nui, a name for a Toa team -- are minor and do not ruin or retcon anything from past story. I think the hue and cry over them is a little overblown.
4) Please keep in mind that I do  not own the story -- LEGO Company does, as they own everything to do with BIONICLE. Anything I do is done with their sufferance, and they can, at any point, declare that nothing else can be canonized if they choose to do so. They are the  only ones with the authority to do that. Any segment of the fanbase can choose to  ignore whatever they like, but they do not have the authority to shut the story down

Round three!

  1. Is the Kanohi Jutlin made from Weaken disks? Their powers are nigh-identical. (As suggested by a member on BZP.)
  2. In Tales of the Masks, the first book you ever wrote for BIONICLE, Onua Nuva and Turaga Whenua encounter a large, pale, tentacled worm Rahi in the depths of Onu-Wahi. In Challenge of the Hordika, Krahka assumes the form of a large, pale, tentacled worm Rahi to fight Roodaka. Was Krahka imitating a member of the species encountered by Onua and Whenua?
  3. In Reign of Shadows, when the Toa Mahri witnessed the Skakdi creating the golden fusion, they assumed that Teridax had put the idea in the Skakdi’s minds, because only he, the Great Spirit, would know that all those beings were destined to transform. However, in an answer in this topic some weeks ago, you implied that Teridax was not responsible for giving the Skakdi that idea. If you wouldn’t mind clarifying: did Teridax manipulate the Skakdi into creating the fusion, or did he not? And if he did not, who knew, and how, that all those beings were destined to fuse?
  4. A while ago, you confirmed that Velika had agents loyal to him stationed on Bara Magna, whence they reported the goings-on to him for 100,000 years. You also confirmed that some of the characters we met in 2009 story were agents of Velika. After this was revealed, I ran a BZPower topic where members discussed which characters they suspected to be working for Velika. The top contenders were Vastus, Atakus, Metus, and Berix. Were any of these four characters working for Velika, or were our suspicious wildly off?

Thank you for your time.

Hello Mr. Greg Farshtey,

There's only one question I'd like to pose: Is there an ending to the Gen1 bionicle stories?

I feel like the story was rushed and the official ending was not the best one for a 10 year series of sets, movies and books that really deepened the story. Is there a better ending than the animation once posted on bionicle.com? Will the Gen2 bionicle see a better ending or propose and ending to Gen2?

I feel like this is not worth much thought but maybe that simple gesture, that simple act of finishing a wonderfully complex story would have a huge impact on new sales and maybe old fans would rejoice and join the new generation as the old one finds its final chapters, or maybe a remote connection between generations.

Thanks for your time and keep up the good work,

A long bionicle series fan

Couple things --

To some extent, the ending of Gen1 was rushed, because we were planning to outline the second of three movies and  instead we found  out the line was being cancelled and we had to put together an ending and take what was going to be a trilogy and wrap it up in one year. So I do see your point.

Unfortunately, it is highly unlikely anything new will get done as far as this goes, because LEGO is focused on new BIONICLE story and does not want old story floating around to confuse new fans. So my getting an okay to write more old story is probably not going to happen.

As far as Gen2 goes, I have nothing to do with Gen2 and I am not on the story team for it so I do not know what they may be thinking in terms of plot resolution. That will also depend on how well the sets sell and how many years the line lasts. In the case of Gen1, the original plan was for it to last for a year and end at the end of 2001, so you have to adjust a lot in this business.

Hey Greg:

1) Do you know where oir how I can contact the story team for the new Bionicle series? I have a couple questions to ask them.

2) On a lore-related note, were the Great Beings technologically advanced enough to build space ships and travel among the stars?
