This question is because of something on the BIONICLE website so I hope you can clear this up.

All of the bios for the Masters refer to thier masks as The Mask of (Element), but Lewa's is called the Mask of Jungle. Is this official or just an error?

To the best of my knowledge, it is official. Lewa is the Master of Jungle, so just as all the other Toa have a mask that matches whatever they are Master of, so does he.

Thanks for answering, Mr. Farshtey!

If you're interested, I'd like to share my opinion on the recently proposed idea about Protodermis being a form of programmable matter.  I think that it is a very logical idea, given all we know about Protodermis.  We know that it takes different forms (liquid, solid, and gas (in the form of water vapor)), and that everything in the MU is made from it.  Given that the GBs were scientists, and many major sciences concern the study of genetics, it seems probable that they might have been able to invent some sort of programmable matter based upon the properties of Energized Protodermis, and thereby code it into different forms, like water, rock, muscle, and other things we've seen in the MU.

However, despite the idea being plausible (and, to some extent, almost obvious), I would put a lot of thought into your final decision.  After all, Protodermis is a major element of the Generation 1 BIONICLE story, so it would probably be best to take any big change/confirmation like this lightly...

That being said, I have one more question to ask of you so far.  It concerns one of the answers you gave to my last set of questions, the one about Icarax:

1. Why WAS Icarax given the Mask of Shadows in 2008?  Did the story team decide they wanted him to retrieve it and then have the set designers reuse the mold?  Or did the designers give him the mask and then say, "Hey, you guys figure out why he has it"?  If you don't know the reason he was given that mask, that's okay...I ask merely out of curiosity.

Set design comes first, so your second option is closer to the truth.

As requested, here is some information on the arguments for and against the other top candidate, Vastus.

Here are some of the reasons BZP members suspected Vastus:

  • Vastus is guilt-ridden about the Core War, so Velika’s promise of peace may have been very appealing to him. He might see service to Velika as atonement for his sins in the Core War.
  • His pledge to protect his people above all else is similar to Velika’s aim, which is ultimately to create a safer world for the Agori.
  • Vastus was a highly respected Glatorian. His career would provide a cover for travel between villages, which would allow him to gather information.
  • He was very quick to trust Mata Nui.
  • Vastus was the one who told Mata Nui about Tarduk’s expedition to the north.
  • During the Core War, Vastus came across prehistoric records left by ancestors of the Agori (mentioned in Mata Nui’s guide). Velika might have supplied him with those records.

And here are some of the arguments other BZP members made against Vastus:

  • Vastus didn’t seem to believe Tarduk when Tarduk told him about the Valley of the Maze and the baterra.
  • Since Vastus was not given a lot of spotlight time in the story, we don’t have very much evidence for or against him.
  • Vastus’s guilt stems from the accidental deaths of many Ice Agori in the Core War. Velika, however, doesn’t seem to care if he has to kill people for the greater good.
  • Vastus preferred to stay close to Tesara to protect his people, decreasing his utility as a spy for Velika.
  • Vastus is very loyal to the Agori and his society, and has said that a Glatorian’s duty is chiefly to his village. This philosophy would be rather at odds with the idea of secretly serving as a spy for a Great Being.

Based on this, i don't think there is enough evidence to implicate Vastus.

I have a question, and I don't know if it was already answered in the story, but please tell me if it was.

1. When Toa Ignika sacrificed himself to reawaken Mata Nui, was his spirit destroyed, or just his body?

2. If his spirit did remain, how was it able to coexist with the spirit of Mata Nui?

Thank a lot for answering all our questions!

1) No, Ignika's conscousness was not destroyed, it continued to exist in the mask

2) Simple. Mata Nui's consciousness overlaid Ignika's, sort of like one coat of paint on top of another. Ignika's was not gone, it was simply buried.

Hey Greg, do the Glatorian who were granted elemental powers have limited elemental reserves like the Toa? Also, are they able to manipulate their elements as well as a Toa would?

Hey Mr. Farshtey,

Hope you've been well! I sent you an email, just in case you weren't aware. I look forward to hearing back from you whenever you have the chance to read it!

Thank you,

Hello, Mr. Farshtey. Long-time fan of your work on Bionicle. I'll keep this short, and I apologize if you have already answered any of these questions.

1. Are the Great Beings organic, or have they evolved to the point of being energy beings?

2. Is Tren Krom truly dead? Or was he also saved by the Red Star?

3. Did comedians exist on Bara Magna or in the MU?

4. Krika lost the ability to reform as a solid entity. Was his mind destroyed as well, or is he now simply watching and knowing he can't interfere in events?

5. Is Tyrant actually dead?

6. I understand your beef with revealing the Shadowed One's name, but are you actually going to take it to the grave?

7. Are there any other alien races near the Solis Magna system?

8. Aside from migrating to Spherus Magna with it, what did Voporak do with the Vahi?

9. When you wrote the characters' dialogue, did you imagine any of them sharing voices with people from our world? Like Jimmy Cagney, or James Earl Jones, for example?

10. Can't Botar just transport himself and anyone else up there from the Red Star?

11. Has Vultraz died since he was last seen, or is he still being experimented on?

12. And finally, if there were to be some kind of apocalypse, which prevented the creation of any more Matoran and the like, who would be the last surviving Bionicle character on Spherus Magna? (Not counting the Great Beings)

So much for keeping it short Wink

I have a couple questions for you.

1.  Is BIONICLE your favorite LEGO theme?

2.  Are you going to be writing more books for BIONICLE now that they brought it back?

Thanks!  This is really groovy that you're doing this. JokingHappy

Forgive me for throwing everyone I can on the table, but...

-Could Raanus be involved with Velika? He worked with the Great Beings before, but no one ever specified which one. Besides, Velika transfered his conscience into a matoran body when the need to send the Mata Nui robot into space became apparent. Also, Kyry was with him.

-Perhaps Malum was part of Velika's scheme, and purposely made Vulcanus exile him so he could prepare the Vorox army? (Also, did Strakk go and join Malum?)

-The Skrall might have someone working for Velika too. Maybe Stronius?

-Ackar didn't seem to believe Kiina when she said that the Great Beings deserted Bara Magna...perhaps he knows something?

-Tarix has been a champion Glatorian since the Core War and knows a lot about fighting. Maybe he also knows something? After all, Glatorian must have a reason for being willing to fight for Agori villages, and if Velika needed people to watch all the villages, he would need spies all over the place.

-In the Matoran universe, he would need a spy in Metru Nui. Could Turaga Dume be aware of Velika being a Great Being and inform him regularly, up to Voya Nui breaking off?

I assume that Velika would not have chosen just one spy for Bara Magna. Would you mind confirming or denying some of BZP's other suspicions? After the first four, the highest suspects in the BZP topic were Tarix, Malum, Raanu, and Surel.

1. Were any of these four characters acting as informants for Velika?

2. Out of curiosity -- why did Velika choose Atakus as one of his secret agents? Does he have special plans for the Skrall?

He never said that specifically, and his opinion is just that-his opinion. Allow me to breifly explain.

His opinion here is like religious and political views.(Though not as important.) While he can certainly discuss them with people he knows in real life as much as he wants(And he should), he cannot represent LEGO when voicing his beliefs and opinions. To speak unfavorably of a company you work for is basically saying you want to be fired.

Besides, Greg has been through too many personal matters to lose his source of income. He has a daughter that he is providing for. He refuses to put his career in jeopardy because he is taking care of his child-another reason I admire Greg's response here.

Let's give Greg a little breathing room here. It's very difficult to see someone else in charge of a story you once had major influence on, and it was very noble of Greg to actually give advice to the new story team. Greg has done quite enough for us older LEGO fans over the years, and now it's time to think of something special to do for him.

In response to 2...

Did Mata Nui ever work with the Ignika as a voice in his head, perhaps? Tren Krom sent a message to Mata Nui in Reign of Shadows, so the Ignika must have been able to receive some kind of signals...

Yes

Was that planned from the start with Atakus in the 2009 story bible?
